The research team, consisting of Architect Nicoletta Brancaccio, Professor and Neuroscientist Stefano Rozzi, Mr. Federico Niola and Psychologist Davide Gattoni, discussed the possible applications in architecture and interior design of the recent discoveries relating to space and its coding, in the neuroscientific field. The research neutralises the distance between disciplines by combining the skills and notions acquired, trying to provide an answer to some crucial questions: what is space? What happens in it? What relationships can it host? And most importantly, how does our brain codify space? Two internationally renowned guests will open the debate: the Architect and Professor J. Mosley will talk about the exploration of the real, symbolic and imaginative dimension of architecture in consideration of the interdependence of bodies and objects. Prof. L. Fogassi will address the issue of activating mirror neurons and their correlation with space, with an emphasis on the concepts of space barrier and purpose in relation to the space. The conclusions of the research work will be shared and with an accent on the following topics: space coding and construction of reality by our sensory system, effects of the built environment on human beings behaviour (Arch. N. Brancaccio, Prof. S. Rozzi), psychological implications on the individual and on small groups (D. Gattoni). The goal is to provide useful insights to space design for professionals with a focus on workspace design. The two representatives of the sponsors (sedus and kreon) will share their experience on the field.
